SHORT HISTORY OF THE BRIDGES FAMILY

Drewry (Drury) Bridges was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina on August 30, 1765. His wife Charity Cohoon (Calhoun), was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina on September 18, 1771. They were married in 1789. Drewry and Charity moved to Trigg County, Kentucky from Edgecombe County in 1804. He and his family made the 600 mile trip by oxen-drawn covered wagon. He and his wife raised six of their seven children, Piety, Selethia, Jemima, William, Elizabeth, and Mary on land located on Beechy Fork Creek in the Maple Grove community. One son Orren Dates had died in North Carolina. The log cabin which Drewry built stood until 1907 when it was torn down by one of his grandsons to build a new home. Today, a portion of the 700 acres owned by Drury upon his death in 1840 is still owned by his descendants.

Three of Drewry and Charity’s children married three of the children of James and Mary (Standley) Thomas, all of whom had large families and created three sets of double cousins. William, their only son who grew to maturity, married Mary Thomas on June 20, 1820. They had twelve children.

Drewry Bridges died on June 13, 1840 and his wife Charity died on October 16, 1852.

The ancestry of Drury Bridges has been traced back to prior to 1500 in England. You can follow this ancestry by clicking here: ANCESTRY OF THE BRIDGES FAMILY
