SHORT HISTORY OF THE BRIDGES FAMILYDrury Bridges was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina on August 30, 1765. His wife Charity Cohoon (Calhoun), was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina on September 18, 1771. They were married in 1789. Drury and Charity moved to Trigg County, Kentucky from Edgecombe County in 1804. He and his family made the 600 mile trip by oxen-drawn covered wagon. He and his wife raised six of their seven children, Piety, Selethia, Jemima, William, Elizabeth, and Mary on land located on Beechy Fork Creek in the Maple Grove community. One son Orren Dates had died in North Carolina. The log cabin which Drury built stood until 1907 when it was torn down by one of his grandsons to build a new home. Today, a portion of the 700 acres owned by Drury upon his death in 1840 is still owned by his descendants. Three of Drury and Charity’s children married three of the children of James and Mary (Standley) Thomas, all of whom had large families and created three sets of double cousins. William, their only son who grew to maturity, married Mary Thomas on June 20, 1820. They had twelve children. Drury Bridges died on June 13, 1840 and his wife Charity died on October 16, 1852. SHORT HISTORY OF THE THOMAS FAMILYJames Thomas II (or Sr.) was born in 1762 in Bertie County, North Carolina and served in the Revolutionary War at the age of 19. His wife, Mary “Mollie” Standley was born in 1762 in Bertie county, North Carolina. James and Mary were married on September 6, 1790. They traveled by covered wagon and flatboat to Trigg County, Kentucky from Bertie County, North Carolina in 1806. They settled on a 200 acre land grant on Donaldson Creek. He and his wife raised seven children: Cullen, Temperance, Perry, Starkie, Mary, James Jr., and Stanley. Three of James and Mary’s children married three of the children of Drury and Charity Bridges, resulting in 36 double cousins. Their son Starkie married Mary Bridges on March 24, 1825. They had eleven children. Their son Perry married Elizabeth Bridges. They had fourteen children. Their daughter Mary Thomas married William Bridges. They had twelve children.
